Getting A Boost

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Ezra has been hating on the highchair for some time. We notice the struggling and the pushing against the tray and seat and everything that is the highchair. We have noticed, so we have decided to begin to try to see if a booster seat is any better for him. We also know that sooner or later we are going to need to have Ezra eat at the table and not in his highchair because who wants to be the parents of the kid who is five and still eating from the highchair? We don’t, so we bought him a booster seat that straps to a ‘big-person’ table chair and allows Ezra to reach the top of the ‘big-person’ table and eat with us on the same plane. So far he appears to be a little more content to sit while in his booster seat, but he still fights against the straps holding him safely down. I still can’t imagine the day when we don’t have to clip Ezra down in straps to be sure he doesn’t jump out of the seat and fall to the ground, but knowing I don’t need to be strapped into my seat gives me hope.

Return of the Golden Pig

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

Ezra no longer sounds like a Golden Goose. The cough and the runny nose have subsided to an occasional hack and booger. With the return of the Golden Pig has been the return of all that play energy that Ezra stored during his day of being sick. On Friday, -v- and I were pushed to our energy limits trying to play/entertain/keep-up-with Ezra. Yesterday, I need a nap mid day after playing with Ezra early in the morning. And today when he has been awake he has been wanting to play play play which can only mean that the Golden Pig has returned!

The Golden Goose?

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

He sounds like a Golden Goose.  Ezra’s sore throat has goose like sounds flowing forth from Ezra when he laughs or cries. As -v- has said, he sounds like a kid losing voice because of puberty when he makes talkie sounds. He  sounded like he was coughing up a golden egg during Monday when coughing. Now a cough sounds like a cough. The cough has subsided. The snot, too.

I find the goose sounds he makes cute, but it is caused with coughing and snot, so I hope the goose sounds and the golden goose gone, so his playful talking, laughing and crying may return us Golden Pig.

Rollercoaster of health

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

On Friday, Ezra received a clean bill of health for his ear infection! This was good news for sure.

Kalab went to Vegas on Friday, leaving Ezra and I to make plans of our own for the weekend. I decided that it would be fun to go to C-town to visit grammie and grampie T. Me and Ezra zoomed down after dropping off dad at the aiport. We arrived less than 2 hours later, and Ezra proceeded to run and explore - this was the first time he’s been to visit as a super mobile walker. He had lots of fun playing with bamboo in the backyard, trying to figure out how to wield an imaginary light saber/fishing pole/javelin. We had yummy food, including more fresh strawberries and blueberries.

Getting ready to leave on Sunday, Ezra seemed a little extra tired. He ended up sleeping the whole way home, and was then a little fussy. We had dinner back in P-town with DJ and G, and then I took DJ to the airport and swapped him for Kalab. Ezra put up with the dinner and the trip to the airport, but wasn’t his normal self, and he probably just wanted to be at home. He was happy to see dad though!

Sunday night Ezra developed a cough, which may or may not have been the cause of the vomiting at about midnight followed by a fever. It was either that or the 1/2 pint of strawberries Ezra ate on Sunday. Or maybe it’s just some mystery virus. Ezra seemed OK Monday morning, but then I got called to come get him from daycare at about noon because he had a fever and had puked again. So Ezra and I came home and got to hang out with dad for the next 36 hours. Ezra was generally OK, but dad and I went through our own little set of maladies, including, I think, a case of food poisoning!

Wednesday morning came and Ezra awoke in pretty good spirits, and went off to daycare with a spring in his step with dad and I sort of shuffling and limping along after him…I’m hoping that our rollercoaster of health has just about reached the end of the line!

Snot Falls From Ezra’s Nose

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Ezra has begun Fall with a slight fever and a runny nose. The runny nose is what kept him awake last night. And it will be the runny nose that will keep him up tonight. I can’t wait until he can feel comfortable both with breathing through his mouth and blowing his nose, but until then there will be a few more long nights of Ezra waking with a nose to stuffed with snot.

Blueberry Poop

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Ezra’s poop smells like blueberries. At first I thought the smell was bad because Amoxicillin creates a strong and pungent smell like mulch. The smell made me hold my breath. But after -v- told me the smell was just blueberries from the blueberries Ezra has been eating, I have since thought the smell good because I smell through mulch like poop smell and do smell the sweat smell of blueberry poop.

Frankenstein Shoes

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

Ezra wore sneakers today for more than a few seconds for the first time. He has been wearing Robeez, which are a lot like moccasins. He likes wearing the Robeez and actually tries to put them on his feet if he sees one laying within reach.

This seemlingly like of Robeez and the Robeez light and flexible base worried -v- and I when putting on his sneakers to wear for the first time for a day. The weight of the sneaker, and the ridged sole, made Ezra walk like his feet were moving his legs and his balance and movement as stiff as the soles. He looked at his feet a lot this morning when walking around. When departing for daycare, the sneakers made his feet wave like pendulums swayed by the heavy soled sneakers.

I did have images of Ezra taking his shoes off and running around searching for a pair of Robeez, but all stories of Ezra’s day tells a story of Ezra okay with his weighty sneakers. He had them on when I arrived home, but did walk faster and freer once the sneakers came off and bare feet were able to touch the ground.

Uh oh!

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

I guess that when I am with Ezra, and he drops his pacifier, my response is “uh oh!” and when he falls down, I say “uh oh!” and when he drops his crackers, I say “uh oh!”…and maybe I say it for other things too, but I just don’t realize it. But a little guy named Ezra sure does! The last couple of days, whenever Ezra drops his pacifier, he says “uh oh” and when he drops his sippy cup off the side of his high chair tray, he says “uh oh” and when he pulls a bunch of bags out of a drawer and leaves them scattered all over the kitchen, he says “uh oh uh uh oh uh oh” : )

Ezra is just about to wrap up his regiment of amoxicillin, and this ER doc only wrote the prescription for the EXACT amount Ezra should take for 10 days. Does he not know children are prone to at least once spitting out the medicine, prompting you to re-administer a half if not a full dose? Uh oh. I am picking up a whole new prescription for him tomorrow, just so he can take a day’s worth of the stuff. Some things are so unneccesarily complicated. I am going to try to take Ezra to the Dr. this week to just check and make sure that the ear infection has responded to the meds. Hopefully the Dr. response when she looks in Ezra’s ears will not be “Uh oh!”

Pulling His Own Red Wagon

Saturday, September 13th, 2008

Ezra pulled his own red wagon today after he rode in it. He began by pushing the red wagon with me steering, but then we showed him the handle and -v- showed him and helped him hold the handle until he moved her hand off the handle and pulled the red wagon.

-v- said Ezra pulling the red wagon was like seeing Shetland pony pulling a prairie wagon.

I Ate Like Ezra

Friday, September 12th, 2008

When Ezra has a full mouth and he can’t chew either because he stuffed his mouth with too much food or we gave him half a plum, he spits the food out into a cupped hand then pushes the food in and out of his mouth chewing until the pieces of food diminish, so he can chew the food and swallow.

I have watched this process many times, and I still stare both because it is cute (because Ezra is doing it) and because I wonder at what point during our evolution that we decided it socially unacceptable while eating with a full mouth to removed the food and move the food in and out of mouth until the amount is dimisnished. I thought this again today while at work, and I was eating a sandwich.

There was a big bite of a sandwich remaining to eat. Instead of doing the smart thing and eat it in two small bites, I shoved it all in my mouth much like Ezra would. The sandwich’s thick crust made the sandwich difficult to chew as did the fact it filled my mouth. I then thought of Ezra. And then I realized what Ezra would do in a situation, so I pushed the slightly chewed sandwich from mouth to hand and moved the food in and out of mouth while chewing until the food was able to fit in mouth, and I could finish eating.

Ezra is Ezra

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Ezra is doing well minus one tooth. He is just about back to the normal, plus-one-tooth Ezra. I think he has almost forgotten all about the incident and the missing tooth. Unfortunately, it will be a while before his mom and dad can forget about it : (

Ezra’s back on a wide ranging drug regimen for a while - during Ezra’s visit to the ER, we learned that he had an ear infection.  So he’s back on amoxicillin for the ears, tylenol and motrin for tooth, mouth and any remaining ear pain, and flouride because we can’t brush his teeth yet. But he doesn’t seem to mind all this, most of the time. He actually even seems to like the taste of amoxicillin, which I find amazing.

Ezra is eating most foods that he liked to eat before. On Monday, the day of the accident, I wanted to get something good for Ezra to eat, so I bought him some blueberries. He was very happy to see some more blueberries, and that day, ate almost all blueberries exclusive of anything else.

Ezra is waking in the night more than usual, although I can hardly remember what normal Ezra sleep is like, so maybe this is the new normal.

Ezra is fun to have at home to play with and talk with - missing one tooth hasn’t slowed him down at all, and we are happy that Ezra is still Ezra!

Minus One Tooth

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Ezra fell down and went boom. He hit hard enough for a tooth to make a mark in the dresser and pop out of his head. Then came the blood and the screams of pain. Then came the confusion and the calling of 911 because he had fallen. Then came the ride to the emergency room. Then hours later everything was calm, and Ezra was missing a tooth. And -v- and I, as parents, were feeling worthless and deadbeat.

The tooth is one of his upper front teeth. The doctors and the dentist said that there was really nothing to worry about, and that everything else is A-OK. A new one will grow in place. But still…But still I feel bad that Ezra had the fall from such a height and that neither of us reacted quick enough to stop the fall.

I do rejoice in the fact a new tooth will grow in its place. I rejoice that nothing else is wrong. I rejoice because his smile is just as cute and adorable.

Ezra’s 13 Months Old!

Sunday, September 7th, 2008

Today Ezra turned 13 months old! Kalab is refusing to recognize this milestone, but I must commemorate each month until he is at least 2.

Ezra celebrated today by being a little fussy. I think his teething of more than 1 molar at a time is a lot to endure. But he did have a fun afternoon at the ice cream social at the park. He got to see some marimba players and play with a number of different percussion instruments, play with his friend M and also with some pretty cute little dogs. He was happy the whole time we were at the park, which made both of us smile : )

He Points

Sunday, September 7th, 2008

Ezra points. He points at the walls. He points at the ceiling. He points at the numbered sheep jumping over invisible fences. He points at the couch, the stairs, the sky, the trees, the peach tree, the rosemary, the garage top, cement, cement with plums on it, plums, plum seeds, another tree, a pear tree, a fence, the squirrel on the fence, the flowers, the dirt, the rocks, the leaf, the apple, the hoop, the step, the branch, the bird, the squirrel on the wire, the CD, the block, the rug, the vacuum, the cat, the person, the diaper, the toy, the blanket, the wall, and he points at those numbered sheep jumping over the invisible fence.

When he points at things, a sound that sounds to be him saying, „Huh,” proceeds.

He points. And I talk about what he may be point at.

Ezra Ran For The Ocean

Friday, September 5th, 2008

We went to the coast today.

Ezra smiled when he stood on the sand. After he learned to stand on the soft sand of the coast, he walked. When he walked on sand wet with tide water, he smiled. When the tide washed over his feet he ran for the ocean, he ran for the ocean.

Ezra’s Sick Day

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

Ezra woke up today with a mild fever, and seemed really really sleeeeepy. He woke up at 6, and seemed in a good mood, but after I fed him in the morning, he fell back asleep. After an hour nap, he woke up and seemed in a good mood, but after I changed him and got him ready to go to daycare, I was sitting on the chair with him, and he fell asleep. So I decided that he should stay home from daycare. He ended up sleeping until 10:15! His fever got a little worse, so I called the pediatrician. I was informed that it was likely a residual fever from the immunizations Ezra got last Friday (which only caused him to cry for maybe 10 seconds!). I hope that is what it is, and I also hope that it’s not a bad thing. Meanwhile, Kalab was home all day too, but he was asleep most of  the day because he too is sick.  Anyway, after Ezra’s marathon naps of this morning, he took another couple of naps in the afternoon, and went to bed just after the Republican Convention coverage ended at 8am. I’m hoping tomorrow Ezra will wake up in a good mood, without a fever (and Kalab will feel better too!) : )
